Francis Duru Dies at 57 After Brief Illness, Family Confirms

Breaking: Veteran Nollywood Actor Francis Duru Dies at 57

Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, his family has announced.

The family confirmed his death in a statement shared on the actor’s official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026. They expressed appreciation to fans and well-wishers for their prayers, love and support during the difficult period.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the statement said, while asking for understanding and prayers.

The family did not disclose the specific illness that led to his death.

The news has prompted fresh tributes to the actor, whose career spanned more than three decades and helped establish him as a familiar face in Nigerian cinema.

Francis Duru’s Rise to Fame in Nollywood

Duru became widely recognised for his portrayal of Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the 1995 action film produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.

The film remains one of the notable productions associated with the early growth of modern Nollywood. Duru’s performance helped introduce him to a wider audience and established his place among the actors who contributed to the industry’s development during that period.

He began his acting career in 1989 and went on to feature in several Nigerian film productions, including Blood Money and Stigma. He also worked as a producer and director during his career.

Beyond acting, Duru was involved in the professional development of the Nigerian film industry. His work extended beyond individual performances to include leadership and service within the actors’ community.

His Education and Awards

Duru studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, graduating in 1996.

His contribution to the entertainment industry received recognition over the years. In 2007, he received a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award, according to published reports.

In 2010, he served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN). That same year, he received a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Africa Movie Academy Awards.

He later won the Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film category at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

These milestones reflected his long involvement in film production and the wider Nigerian entertainment industry.

Actor Had Previously Addressed Health Rumours

Duru’s death comes months after he publicly dismissed rumours suggesting that he was battling a life-threatening illness.

In June 2026, the actor responded to speculation about his health after footage from a movie location circulated online. He criticised the spread of unverified claims and maintained that the reports about his condition were false.

The family’s current announcement says he died after a brief illness but does not provide further medical details. There is therefore no confirmed basis to link the earlier rumours to the circumstances of his death.

Tributes Expected From Nollywood Community

The National President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Abubakar Yakubu, also paid tribute to Duru following news of his passing, describing him as a great thespian.

His death represents a loss for colleagues, audiences and the Nigerian film industry, particularly viewers who remember his performances in the films that helped shape Nollywood’s early years.
