Abiodun Urges Ogun Corps Members to Turn National Service Into Community Impact

By CentralNewsNG News Desk | November 7, 2026

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged newly deployed National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to approach their national assignment with discipline, honesty and a commitment to solving problems in the communities where they will serve.

The governor said the value of the one-year programme should not be measured only by attendance at orientation camps or the completion of official duties, but also by the positive contributions corps members make to their host communities.

Abiodun delivered the message on Friday, November 6, during the swearing-in ceremony for the 2026 Batch C Stream II orientation course at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Sagamu, Ogun State.

Represented by the state’s Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka, the governor described national service as an opportunity for young Nigerians to strengthen national unity while contributing their knowledge and abilities to local development.

He encouraged the corps members to regard their Oath of Allegiance as a responsibility that should guide their conduct throughout the service year and beyond.

Ogun receives more than 4,000 corps members

The Ogun State NYSC Coordinator, Frances Omolabake Adewuyi, disclosed that 4,152 prospective corps members had registered for the orientation exercise.

According to her breakdown, 3,698 were deployed directly to Ogun State. The group comprises 1,460 males and 2,238 females.

Another 454 corps members were dislodged from Lagos State and included in the Ogun orientation exercise. They consist of 171 males and 283 females.

The number reflects the scale of the responsibility facing camp officials, security agencies and the state government as they prepare the participants for their assignments.

Adewuyi urged the new members to take the orientation seriously, explaining that the Programme is intended to prepare them for the responsibilities and challenges of national service.

She also encouraged them to obey camp regulations, respect constituted authorities and remain alert to security risks.

Governor identifies discipline and integrity as priorities

Abiodun warned the corps members against dishonesty, greed and other conduct that could undermine public trust.

He said their behavior would influence how communities receive them and how effectively they perform their duties.

The governor also advised them to avoid becoming involved in electoral malpractice as political activities increase ahead of another election cycle.

He specifically cautioned against allowing themselves to be used for electoral violence, vote manipulation or the spread of false information.

His warning places particular emphasis on the need for corps members to remain neutral and respect the law, especially where their official responsibilities bring them into contact with public institutions or election-related activities.

The governor urged them to demonstrate professionalism and avoid actions that could compromise their personal safety or the credibility of the NYSC scheme.

Corps members encouraged to solve problems in host communities

Beyond their official assignments, Abiodun challenged the participants to identify practical needs in the communities where they would be posted.

He said young graduates could contribute to local development by applying their education, professional knowledge and individual skills to problems affecting residents.

Such contributions could include educational support, community awareness activities, skills development initiatives and other projects that respond to identified local needs.

The Ogun State NYSC Coordinator reinforced this message, advising each corps member to identify at least one pressing need in their host community and contribute towards addressing it.

Her message highlights an important aspect of national service: the opportunity to leave a useful contribution behind after the compulsory service year ends.

For communities receiving corps members, the potential benefits extend beyond the placement of additional personnel. Their involvement in education, public awareness and other community-based activities can support existing local development efforts.

However, the success of these initiatives depends on identifying genuine needs and working with community leaders and relevant institutions rather than introducing projects without understanding local conditions.

NYSC urged to prepare young graduates for life after service

The governor also encouraged the participants to use the orientation period to develop skills that could improve their prospects after completing national service.

He identified leadership, entrepreneurship, teamwork, security awareness and community development as important areas of preparation.

Abiodun pointed to several programmes and projects introduced by his administration as possible sources of opportunities for young people in Ogun State.

These include the Ogun State Job Portal, vocational training centers and support initiatives for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises.

He also mentioned the state’s industrial clusters, Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone, Gateway International Airport and proposed Aerotropolis project as developments expected to support economic activities in agriculture, logistics and industry.

The governor further identified the Ogun TechHub as a platform for young people seeking digital skills in areas such as software development, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital marketing and data analytics.

He encouraged corps members to explore legitimate training and enterprise opportunities rather than depend entirely on securing traditional salaried employment after their service year.

While the programmes offer possible pathways, corps members should confirm their eligibility, application requirements and available opportunities through the relevant official channels.

Security and welfare remain important during service

Abiodun advised the corps members to take their personal security seriously throughout their stay in the state.

He urged them to use recognized motor parks, avoid suspicious financial transactions and reject questionable offers from strangers.

The governor also assured them that the Ogun State Government would continue to work with NYSC officials and security agencies to support their welfare and safety.

Adewuyi acknowledged the contributions of the state government, security agencies, medical personnel, camp officials and other stakeholders towards the orientation exercise.

She also assured parents and guardians that the state NYSC management remained committed to the welfare and security of the participants.

A service year measured by its contribution

The messages delivered at the Sagamu orientation camp point to a broader expectation for the new corps members: national service should provide more than a temporary posting or a certificate at the end of twelve months.

For the participants, the period offers an opportunity to develop professional experience, build relationships across different backgrounds and understand the needs of communities outside their immediate environments.

For Ogun State, the presence of thousands of young graduates creates an opportunity to support existing community programmes while encouraging participants to develop skills that could remain useful after their service.

Whether these expectations translate into meaningful results will depend on the commitment of the corps members, the support provided by their host institutions and the opportunities available to them.

As the 2026 Batch C Stream II participants begin their assignments, the challenge is to turn the principles discussed during orientation into responsible conduct and practical contributions throughout their service year.
